Manchester United Set for a European Pre-Season Adventure
As the warmth of summer approaches, Manchester United is gearing up for an exciting pre-season tour across Europe. The team will embark on a series of friendly matches in July and August, making stops in Finland, Sweden, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, and Poland.
According to reports from The Athletic, the journey kicks off in Helsinki, Finland, where United will face Wrexham on July 18. Following that opener, they will take on Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway, on July 24, before heading to Stockholm to take on Atlético Madrid on August 1. The tour continues with a high-profile match against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on August 8, followed by a clash with Leeds United at Dublin’s Croke Park on August 12. The European bow will culminate in Wrocław, Poland, where AC Milan awaits on August 15.
While interest in staging matches in Asia was noted, the club has decided to keep its pre-season activities closer to home this year.
United has a storied history in Scandinavia, yet their competitive encounters have been limited. Their only match in Finland occurred when they secured a 3-2 win against HJK in the first leg of a European Cup tie, followed by a resounding 6-0 victory in the return at Old Trafford. Interestingly, they have yet to play a competitive match in Norway, with Bodo/Glimt marking the first Norwegian team to visit Old Trafford during their Europa League matchup in 2024.
Their final friendly is set to occur just before the World Cup final on July 19. Players participating in the tournament will be granted a break once their national duties conclude.
It’s worth noting that among those not joining national teams at the World Cup are Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund. Currently, Hojlund and Onana are on loan, with the latter expected to return to Manchester this summer, while Napoli holds a £38 million obligation to purchase Hojlund, contingent on their Champions League qualification.
As the international break comes to a close, Michael Carrick’s team is set to resume their Premier League campaign, focusing on qualifying for the Champions League. Their next match is against Leeds United on Monday, April 13, followed by a challenging fixture at Chelsea the subsequent weekend.
Carrick’s leadership has propelled United to third place, with seven games remaining in the season. However, whether he will maintain his role during the pre-season tour remains uncertain. The former midfielder is a frontrunner for a permanent appointment, yet United management has kept potential plans under wraps, with no alternative candidates being approached as of yet.
As anticipation builds for the summer tour and the ongoing Premier League season, Manchester United fans have plenty to look forward to in the months ahead.
