In the picturesque Nuuksio region, just outside Helsinki, a vibrant community effort is underway to combat the encroachment of invasive large-leaved lupins that threaten the delicate balance of native wildflower populations. Leading the charge is Hawkhill, a travel company renowned for its commitment to sustainability. This spring, they’ve launched an innovative initiative dubbed the Lupine Battle, rallying together summer residents, local businesses, associations, and eager travelers.
With the support and expert guidance of the Regional Environment Centre, volunteers have made remarkable strides, clearing over 200 bags of these invasive plants in a single season, aided by the power of social media to spread the word and boost participation.
But the efforts don’t stop there. Hawkhill also invites visitors to discover the enchanting Haukansuo bog, a vital and unique ecosystem currently undergoing careful restoration. Bogs play a crucial role as Finland’s most significant carbon sinks; in fact, over 30% of the country was once covered in these swampy landscapes. Through guided walks, guests can immerse themselves in the beauty of bog plants and berries, while delving into the rich history and mythology that entwines with this captivating environment. This hands-on experience allows visitors to witness the restoration process firsthand, deepening their appreciation for Finland’s natural heritage.
