If you find yourself with just one long afternoon in Hanko, let me offer two standout suggestions: take a leisurely walk along the elegant wooden Villas of Appelgrenintie and explore the Tulliniemi (Uddskatan) nature trail, which meanders through breathtaking coastal landscapes all the way to the southernmost tip of mainland Finland.
That’s precisely how my sister and I decided to spend our day—she hadn’t visited Hanko in years, and we thought it was high time for a reunion. We set off with her children and dogs in tow, with my husband joining us for the adventure.
Tulliniemi Nature Trail

Following the Shoreline
After parking at Tulliniemi, we strolled just a few hundred meters before reaching the sea, where the path began to trace the shoreline—a real hallmark of the hike.
Though the sky was overcast and a strong sea breeze sent occasional rain showers our way, our spirits remained high. The gray summer day cast a unique, contemplative vibe over our journey. As we navigated the rocky coastline, we passed a resting shelter complete with restroom facilities.
Along the shore, we appreciated the vibrant growth of sea kale and other colorful flora typical of the coastal environment. We admired these natural wonders from a distance, mindful of the fact that this is a protective nature reserve. Dogs are welcome on the trail, but they must remain leashed for the duration of the hike.
Into the Forest
Before long, the path beckoned us away from the shoreline and into a lush forest. The trail alternated between piney woods and greener groves, keeping our experience ever-engaging.
Well-marked and evidently popular, Tulliniemi drew various groups of hikers, including international visitors. It’s easy to see why Hanko has captured the hearts of so many.
The Tulliniemi trail is an out-and-back route, meaning you retrace your steps along the same path—with the exception of a brief loop over smooth, bare rock at the peninsula’s tip, this segment being the walk’s crowning moment.
The Tip and the Rocks
At the very tip of the peninsula, the horizon opens up in a stunning panorama. Smooth rock unfurls in every direction, offering a dynamic experience that shifts with the whimsical winds. This area does present the trail’s most challenging part, involving a bit of light rock scrambling—so sturdy footwear is a wise choice.
We spotted several people perched on the rocks, contemplating the vast sea and savoring the summer day. We paused, too, taking in the tranquil atmosphere despite our awareness that we would soon need to head back. Still, we aimed to squeeze in a coffee break and some time to admire the lovely villas along Appelgrenintie before my niece had to catch her train back to Helsinki.
Hanko: A Year-Round Gem
Hanko truly flourishes in the lively embrace of summer with its bustling visitors, boats, and seasonal residents. However, I find it equally enchanting in the autumn months. Regardless of the season, the town boasts wide sandy beaches and striking rocky shores that beckon for exploration, while its charming architecture, including those timeless wooden villas, glimmers in every light.
I would even venture to say that Hanko in winter, with its icy landscape, offers an otherworldly experience—exotic even to a native Finn, and undoubtedly captivating for those visiting from afar. That may just have to be our next adventure.
Pro-tip! Just across from the Tulliniemi nature trail lies a large sandy beach, easily accessible from the Tulliniemi parking area.
