A Teacher’s Love for Bears Wins International Accolades
Valtteri Mulkhainen, a health teacher at a Finnish high school, has recently made waves in the world of wildlife photography, capturing the essence of Finland’s majestic brown bears in a series of heartwarming portraits. His work has garnered several prestigious awards, including the 2018 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards for his charming series, “Mother Returns from a Parents’ Meeting.”
Reflecting on his inspiration, the 57-year-old Mulkhainen shared, “Now that I’m 57, I yearn for grandchildren, and bear cubs remind me so much of young children—always playing, bickering, and then playing again.” His affinity for these creatures transcends mere admiration; it’s a connection rooted in the joy and chaos of family life.
Based in Sotkamo, a picturesque town in northeast Finland, Mulkhainen has built a reputation as a passionate wildlife photographer, skillfully portraying the activities of Europe’s largest predator. His recent photographs portray a family of cubs engaging in playful antics, like climbing trees and frolicking with each other—moments that he captures with a sense of warmth and humor.
Describing the experience of capturing his award-winning photo, he recalled, “The cubs were up in the tree for about an hour, just like little kids. They couldn’t stay still, running up and down with boundless energy.”
