Finnair Expands Horizons with New Toronto Route
In an ambitious move set to take flight next summer, Finnair, the leading airline of the Nordic region, has announced that Canada will be its latest destination. This marks a significant step in the airline’s ongoing Transatlantic expansion, connecting Canada’s bustling metropolis, Toronto, with Helsinki—the heart of Finland and Finnair’s home base.
Beginning on May 4, 2026, this new route will offer the only direct flights between Canada and Finland, linking two nations that share not only geographic proximity but also a deep appreciation for nature and wildlife, and a strikingly similar climate.
Canadian Service Details
Finnair’s service to Canada will operate three times a week throughout the summer season. Flights will be conducted using the airline’s Airbus A330 fleet, equipped to accommodate all classes of travelers: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy.
Departures from Toronto Pearson International Airport are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 11:40 PM, with arrival in Helsinki the following afternoon at 2:45 PM. Conversely, flights returning to Toronto will leave Helsinki at 4:50 PM on the same days, bringing passengers back to Canada at 6:35 PM, just under nine hours later. This new route marks the airline’s return to Canada for the first time since 2015, opening doors for travelers eager to discover one of Europe’s most captivating destinations.
Expanding Connectivity
The introduction of this route is expected to enhance connectivity across the Nordics and Baltics, allowing travelers from Canada to explore uncharted cities such as the Arctic gem Tromsø in Norway, the medieval charm of Tallinn in Estonia, and the picturesque Bergen, renowned as the gateway to the Norwegian fjords. Major European hubs including Berlin, Copenhagen, Rome, and Warsaw will also be more accessible than ever.
Seamless Connections to India
For those planning to travel further afield, Finnair’s new service offers convenient connections from Toronto to India. The timing of flights will synchronize perfectly with Finnair’s daily route to Delhi, creating a smooth travel experience for passengers heading to the subcontinent.
“As many travelers embark on their summer vacations, we’re already looking to 2026 and are thrilled to reveal Canada as our newest destination,” said Javier Roig Sanchez, Finnair’s General Manager for North America. “This direct connection between our two nations is a testament to our commitment to the North American market and the vital role it plays in our business strategy. With high demand for travel from Canada to Europe and growing interest in long-haul travel from Europeans to Canada, we anticipate great success for this route, whether for leisure or business. Furthermore, we expect strong demand for travel between Canada and India, benefiting travelers who prefer the convenience of connecting through Helsinki Airport.”
An Elevated Travel Experience
Passengers flying with Finnair from Canada can expect a refreshed travel experience, highlighted by the airline’s €200 million investment in its long-haul cabin. Features include the innovative non-reclining Business Class (AirLounge) seat, a newly designed Premium Economy class with its own dedicated cabin, and an upgraded Economy offering.
With the addition of Toronto, Finnair will now provide flights to Helsinki from seven North American gateways: Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Seattle, and Toronto.
All North American services are timed to ensure easy connections to Finnair’s extensive European network, comprising 25 destinations in the Nordics and four in the Baltics. The airline boasts seamless transfers between flights, requiring as little as 40 minutes, thanks to the convenience of operations from the same terminal.
