This summer, visitors to Ulko-Tammio Island in the eastern Gulf of Finland are being urged to take a step back from their smartphones. In a bid to enhance the island’s tranquil setting, the local tourism board, Visit Kotka-Hamina, is launching a campaign that invites guests to disconnect from social media and reconnect with nature.
The initiative has garnered support from Metsähallitus, Finland’s wildlife agency, which recognizes the unique suitability of Ulko-Tammio as a sanctuary for such a digital detox. “Given that Ulko-Tammio is situated within a national park, it’s the perfect spot for a phone break,” noted Essi Orama, a communications partner at Metsähallitus.
Throughout the island, visitors will encounter signs encouraging them to set aside their devices. While mobile networks operate as usual, the campaign emphasizes that the focus should be on immersing oneself in the serene surroundings rather than scrolling through screens.
The broader goal of the initiative is to inspire a reflection on the time spent fixated on gadgets, both while on the island and long after returning home. “We hope many will participate. Summer is the ideal time to put your devices on holiday mode and fully enjoy the Finnish summer and the company of family and friends,” Orama told Yle.
