Are you on the hunt for must-see attractions in Ylläs? I had an unforgettable trip there, and I’m eager to share my insights to help you craft your own memorable adventure.
Touching down in Kittilä felt like stepping into a postcard. The sweeping vistas of pristine, snowy landscapes offered a breathtaking introduction to Finnish Lapland, filling me with excitement before my journey even began.
While I had always dreamed of visiting Lapland, I’d never heard of Ylläs until an invitation popped up on my radar.
“Ylläs is located 150 km north of the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, Scandinavia, brimming with a diverse array of activities, services, and local hospitality. Two charming Lappish Villages, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, welcome you with open arms. With a population of just 850, you’re sure to feel the warmth of community spirit here!”

8 Awesome Things to Do in Ylläs, Lapland, in Winter
— All the great photos of me captured by Harri Lindfors.
1. Explore the Snow Village
One of the standout experiences in Ylläs is visiting the Snow Village, a whimsical settlement entirely constructed from snow—think igloos, ice bars, and more.
I was fortunate to take a guided tour, marveling at the creative craftsmanship of ice artists from around the globe who design this village each year. They have even constructed a dome restaurant, complete with cozy dining booths and a charming bar.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can book a night in one of the ice hotel rooms. Each uniquely designed room showcases intricately carved beds and distinctive entrances. There’s even an ice slide, which I gleefully rode multiple times, along with an ice cinema, bar, and even a chapel—all created from ice.
“As winter progresses, the roof of the Snow Village compresses, shrinking a few centimeters as the ice melts and settles.”

I learned that in 2018, a tribute to *Game of Thrones* was intricately etched into the ice. While I’m not a fan of the show, it was delightful to witness the excitement of those who were.
“The Snow Village is a magical realm of ice and snow, built annually with 20 million kilos of snow and 350,000 kilos of pure, natural ice. Covering about 20,000 square meters, it features a Snow Hotel, Ice Restaurant, Ice Bar, Ice Chapel, an ice slide, and remarkable corridors adorned with stunning ice art.”

2. Hit the Slopes at Ylläs Ski Resort
Ylläs is renowned as a premier ski destination. On my first full day, I tackled the slopes at the Ylläs Ski Resort, nestled against the scenic backdrop of Äkäslompolo Village. It’s Finland’s largest ski resort, famed for its varied slopes and stunning views across the rugged peaks of Pallas-Ylläs National Park.
For an authentic winter experience, you simply can’t miss the breathtaking beauty of skiing at Ylläs. You can find the Ylläs piste map online before your visit.
3. Embrace the Sauna and Ice Hole Swimming Experience
I’ve penned a separate post about my plunge into an ice hole in Finland, but let me summarize: after initially quaking in my boots, I eventually gave in to peer pressure and braved the freezing waters.
We were at Ylläksen Yöpuu in Äkäslompolo if you wish to replicate my adventure.
It was unequivocally once-in-a-lifetime—filled with icy thrills and heart-pounding moments as my focus shifted from the cold water to the warmth of my robe. My hesitations and retreats only intensified the fun as I witnessed others dive in.

4. Savor Dinner at the Lapland Hotel Saaga
Our first dining experience in Ylläs was at the Lapland Hotel Saaga, where I quickly learned this establishment is renowned as one of the finest restaurants in the region.
For a starter, we indulged in reindeer tartare, marking the beginning of my culinary adventures in Finland. Despite initial apprehensions, reindeer proved to be a delicious and healthy choice, a local delicacy reflecting the region’s rich culinary heritage.
The breathtaking vistas of the snowy slopes illuminated our meal, making dinner at this hotel a feast for the senses. I fondly recall the fish and asparagus for the main course, but it was the crème brûlée that truly stole the show—a delectable finale to our meal. Make sure to try it if you visit!
5. Enjoy More Downhill Skiing at Sport Resort Ylläs
My skiing escapades in Ylläs were nothing short of extraordinary. The slopes weren’t crowded, creating a serene environment where I could focus on refining my skills while soaking in the stunning scenery.
Every moment in the ski lifts was captivating, offering panoramic views that made me feel wonderfully small beneath the vast expanse of Lapland’s beauty.
“Sport Resort Ylläs is Finland’s highest ski resort, boasting the greatest number of slopes and the highest elevation differences in the country. The gondola lift brings guests to the top in just seven minutes, maximizing time spent on the slopes.”

6. Embark on a Fat Bike Adventure
My first encounter with fat biking was equal parts exhilarating and challenging; maintaining balance on the snowy terrain proved to be more complex than I anticipated.
With my fair share of tumbles—about five, to be precise—I found humor in the process and reveled in the thrill of discovering my limits. This thrilling experience was made even more enjoyable by the fantastic views as we pedaled through snow-covered trails.
Cycling with Hidden Trails, the electric fat bikes added a delightful twist, making the terrain more accessible and the ride an unforgettable experience.
7. Cozy Up at the Ski Hut
During our fat biking tour, we stumbled upon this enchanting little café, providing the perfect sanctuary from the cold. With a crackling fire and a warm ambiance, it felt like a scene from a fairy tale.
We relished our well-earned treats of cake and hot drinks, reveling in the comfort of the hut, wishing we could stay there forever.
8. Cap Off Your Visit with Dinner at Aurora Estate
Once again, I find myself at a loss for words, but Aurora Estate certainly lived up to its reputation. Nestled close to where we had just braved the ice hole, it was a beautiful setting for dinner.
While I missed the chance to witness the magnificent Aurora Borealis, I was still captivated by the enchanting surroundings as we enjoyed yet another delectable meal featuring reindeer—arguably my favorite of the trip.
Our starter of salmon and caviar, followed by a delightful dessert of ice cream with popcorn, left a lasting impression. Paired with some exquisite wine, it was the perfect way to close out our Ylläs adventure.
