From the serene shores of Lakeland to the enchanting landscapes of Lapland, Finland’s outdoors beckons families for year-round adventures.

Currently, I find myself in Tampere, southern Finland, alongside my husband, Ed, and our two children, 11-year-old Zac and May. We’re blending a vibrant city getaway with thrilling outdoor escapades in Levi, a popular northern resort.
Our journey begins on the whimsically named overnight train, the Santa Claus Express, which carries us to Kolari—a short hour away from Levi. As we settle in for the night, the city glows behind us, and by morning, we awaken to the golden sun illuminating a picturesque snowy pine forest.
Family Fun in Finnish Lapland
The magical mix of Santa, snow, reindeer, and huskies draws families to Finnish Lapland, especially during the festive season. Each Christmas, holiday spots here sell out quickly, a testament to the enduring allure of winter wonder.

This past March, Tui responded to increasing interest by introducing direct flights from Manchester to Finland’s Arctic Lakeland, launching holiday packages for December. Chris Logan, Tui UK’s commercial director, emphasizes, “Arctic Lakeland encapsulates everything families adore about a Finnish Christmas—from husky sledding to reindeer rides and personal meetings with Santa—all in a more intimate setting and at a competitive price.” His insight reflects strong early interest in these offerings.

However, adventures in Finland don’t have to be confined to winter. The country—often recognized as the happiest in the world—presents a plethora of opportunities for family escapes throughout spring, summer, and autumn. Activities range from swimming in crystalline lakes and enjoying communal sauna sessions to exploring quirky museums or immersing in the whimsical world of the Moomins.
During our Easter trip to Lapland, enough snow remained for us to partake in husky and reindeer rides, attempt ice fishing, and visit the Elves Village—all without the typical holiday crowds, making for an almost private experience at the attractions.
If you’re considering a trip, summer emerges as the most budget-friendly time to explore Levi, ideal for families desiring a memorable holiday away from the peak-season throngs and the Mediterranean sun. Kids can even indulge in gold panning in local rivers or herb-picking alongside elves as part of the summer activity line-up.
While May and Zac still rave about the exhilaration of our sleigh ride with All Huskies safari, what they cherish most is that heartwarming encounter with the over seventy huskies, learning their names and snuggling with a jubilant pack of puppies—a delight that remains available even in snow-free seasons.
Moomin World

Another notable highlight for families visiting Finland is Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomins. With 2025 marking the 80th anniversary of her first book, The Moomins and the Great Flood, enthusiasts are in for a treat this year. Several celebratory events will unfold across the country, including special exhibitions at Tampere’s Moomin Museum, dance performances in autumn, and a Tove Jansson exhibit set to launch in October at Helsinki’s Architecture and Design Museum, not to mention the fantasy-filled Moomin World theme park located just ten miles from Turku.
The Moomin stories beautifully capture the wonder of nature, resonating with our active family that never strayed far from green spaces or outdoor adventures, even while based in urban centers.
In Tampere, we tackled an escape room adventure set in a forest overlooking Lake Pyhäjärvi, and later experimented with the Flou floating sauna, reveling in refreshing dips in the lake. Families venturing to Helsinki can also enjoy cycling along the serene Vantaa River or relax on its scenic beaches and nearby islands, such as Pihlajasaari, reachable by ferry.
Northern Lights sightings are even possible during the summertime in Finnish Lakeland.
As our family holiday in Finland drew to a close, we returned home rejuvenated, reflecting on the wise words from northern lights safari guide Heli Alatalo of Soma Adventures. When I asked her why Finland consistently earns its title as the happiest place on Earth, she responded, “We are very positive because we have space and nature. We don’t get stressed, and we live in the moment.” In a fast-paced world inundated with distractions, such principles are invaluable reminders to relish each other’s company.
