Erik Valnes Steps Back from Tour de Ski
Erik Valnes, the Olympic champion in the team sprint, has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the ongoing Tour de Ski.
The Norwegian Ski Federation announced his withdrawal on Friday, citing Valnes’s fatigue and insufficient recovery after the challenging first four stages of the competition.
Following the grueling fourth stage in Toblach, Valnes expressed his frustration candidly. “It was hell,” he remarked during an interview with Norway’s TV2, alluding to the arduous demands of the race. His sentiments were even more explicit in conversations with the press, reflecting the toll the event has taken on him.
In the fourth stage, a 20-kilometer traditional pursuit, Valnes started with a 1-minute and 21-second deficit behind leader Johannes Klæbo. He crossed the finish line in a disappointing 37th place, trailing the winner by three minutes and 39 seconds.
Valnes faced a particularly tough choice regarding the fifth stage set for Saturday—a sprint on the Olympic course he is all too familiar with. With a mind filled with contemplation and exhaustion, stepping back became a necessary but challenging resolution for him.
As a proud Tromsian and already a member of the Norwegian Olympic team, Valnes’s focus is undoubtedly on regaining his strength and preparing for future competitions.
