Holiday Spending Stress in Finland: A Survey Reveals Growing Concerns

As the festive season approaches, a notable trend has emerged: nearly half of households in Finland are feeling the weight of financial strain associated with holiday celebrations. This unsettling revelation comes from a recent survey conducted by Lähi-Tapiola, a prominent financial group and insurance firm.

In a marked shift from recent years, Finnish households are anticipating an average expenditure of 460 euros this Christmas—a sum that encompasses gifts, food, decorations, travel, and other holiday preparations. This marks an increase of 40 euros from last year’s budget, illustrating the first uptick in spending since 2021.

Yet, despite intentions to splurge a bit more this holiday, many respondents are grappling with anxiety over costs. A significant 43 percent reported that the expenses tied to the holidays are causing them stress, with the highest levels of concern found among households with children and those on tighter budgets.

Interestingly, the survey also highlights that older adults—specifically those over 75—are planning to allocate the most funds for Christmas this year. In fact, their anticipated spending has surged from approximately 530 euros last Christmas to a striking 680 euros this year.

Younger generations are not far behind. Respondents under 25 reported an increase in their holiday budgets as well, planning to allocate around 310 euros this year, up from nearly 190 euros in 2022.

The survey also uncovered a gendered disparity in spending habits. Female participants indicated a willingness to spend about 20 percent more than last year—around 80 euros extra—while male respondents anticipate maintaining their previous budgets.

Meanwhile, households with two children, particularly those led by individuals aged 45 to 54 and those in the highest income brackets, indicated they may spend slightly less this holiday season.

Conducted in October by polling firm Verian, Lähi-Tapiola’s survey included around 1,000 Finnish residents. The results reflect a statistical margin of error of approximately 3.1 percentage points in either direction, providing a snapshot into the financial attitudes towards holiday expenditures across the nation.

As Finland gears up for the festivities, the intersection of increased spending and heightened financial concern challenges many to navigate the holiday season with care and mindfulness.
