Spain: A Top Destination for Finnish Tourists
Spain continues to capture the hearts of Finnish travelers, emerging as a vibrant favorite among their destinations. According to Statistics Finland, last year, it secured the position as the third most popular foreign destination for Finns, right behind Sweden and Estonia. However, when gauging overnight stays, Spain takes the gold medal, indicating a deeper commitment to exploration.
Recent data from the Spanish tourism promotion center Turespaña reveals that Spain not only topped the chart for overnight visits last year but has maintained its position as the go-to locale for Finnish tourists in early 2023. Mariangel Velasquez, Turespaña’s communications representative in Finland, noted that by August 2025, more than 360,000 Finns are expected to have journeyed to Spain.
On average, Finnish visitors spend about 9.5 nights in Spain, with a handful staying for over a month. Popular regions include the sun-kissed coasts of Alicante and the cultural richness of Andalusia. While the traditional Canary Islands and Costa del Sol remain beloved go-to spots, a noteworthy trend is emerging: an increasing number of Finns are venturing off the beaten path to explore lesser-known destinations that blend local culture, exquisite cuisine, and breathtaking scenery.
Here are five Spanish cities currently gaining traction among Finnish travelers:
1. Bilbao
Nestled in Spain’s Basque Country, Bilbao is a haven for food and art lovers. The renowned Guggenheim Museum stands as a testament to the city’s cultural prowess, complemented by 22 Michelin-starred restaurants. But for those seeking a more laid-back experience, pintxo bars offer a delightful twist on the beloved tapas, encouraging patrons to savor individual bites of local flavor.
2. Seville
As the capital of Andalusia, Seville is a treasure trove for culture enthusiasts. Its expansive historic center is a canvas for magnificent festivals, particularly the splendid celebrations surrounding Easter week. Renowned for its flamenco tradition and stunning architectural landmarks like the Alcázar Palace, Seville also enjoys popularity among fans of the hit series Game of Thrones due to its cinematic locales.
3. Valencia
Combining beach life with cultural innovation, Valencia is the birthplace of paella and home to an array of futuristic architecture. The city is not only a marvel of science and research but has also recently garnered accolades for its sustainability initiatives. Starting April 11, direct Finnair flights from Helsinki will make visiting this coastal gem even easier, propelling its allure further.
4. Murcia
For those seeking a more tranquil escape, sunny Murcia offers a welcoming alternative to bustling tourist hotspots. Known for its charming church landscapes and delectable cuisine, particularly fresh fruit and seafood, Murcia allows visitors to immerse themselves in authentic Spanish life without the crowds and inflated prices.
5. Granada
In Granada, a beautiful blend of culture, nature, and history awaits. The iconic Alhambra Palace and its stunning gardens are must-see attractions. Beyond the city’s rich cultural tapestry, the Sierra Nevada’s mountain scenery provides a picturesque backdrop for nature lovers, making it an ideal destination for those seeking both relaxation and adventure.
New Motivations for Travel
While sunny beaches remain the primary draw for Finnish tourists heading to Spain, new interests are expanding the horizons of travel.
TV and Movie Tours: With a growing penchant for exploring filming locations of popular series like Mint and Game of Thrones, Finnish fans are flocking to iconic sites across the country.
Wellness and Sports Trips: Many travelers are now intertwining their vacations with wellness, seeking out opportunities for golf, yoga, and outdoor adventures.
Hiking and Nature Tourism: There is a noticeable increase in Finns opting for hiking and nature exploration, especially along scenic routes like the Camino de Santiago, attracting those keen on sustainability and active lifestyles.
As Spain continues to evolve and adapt as a destination, it beautifully marries tradition with modernity, making it an irresistible choice for Finnish travelers.
