Nestled around the picturesque Sapokka Bay in Kotka, the Sapokka Water Garden is a serene urban oasis where the splendor of water features takes center stage. My mind had long held onto the image of a towering waterfall nestled within this green space. So, when I found myself in Kotka for an entirely different purpose, the sight of that very waterfall beckoned me to meander through the Water Garden during my brief visit.

Kotka, located in southeastern Finland, sits at the confluence of the Kymi River and the Gulf of Finland. Approximately 130 kilometers east of Helsinki, reachable by a train journey of around three hours, the city boasts a rich maritime heritage, a sprawling national urban park, and a stunning archipelago that greets the horizon.
After a day spent on Haapasaari Island, the short walk from the ferry harbor to Sapokka Water Garden felt like a delightful detour. Between us and the Garden lay a guest marina and a sprawling car park, where the enticing Maretarium caught my attention. However, with a pounding headache beginning to creep in, a brief stroll through the park was about all I could muster before the long drive home. Yet, I was glad I made the effort — the beauty of the place was undeniable.
As we walked past the Maretarium, through the car park and past an ice cream kiosk, we soon reached a quaint little bridge — the gateway to the park. At its foot, a horse chestnut tree was blooming, its flowers just within reach. I’ve rarely seen such vibrant blooms up close, prompting us to pause and soak in the moment.
Beyond a large boulder, another bridge came into view in the distance, inviting further exploration.
While I can’t provide a comprehensive assessment of accessibility, I noticed that the paths near the water’s edge were both flat and wide, making for an easy stroll.
As we ventured higher up the slope, the paths narrowed and steepened slightly. The air was fragrant with the scent of azaleas, and the rhododendrons were just beginning to unfurl their blossoms. Seduced by their beauty, we meandered along these inviting trails for a brief detour.
A gentle stream trickled beside us, winding through a shallow pool and feeding into Sapokka Bay. Sculptures, meticulously placed flower beds, and stone-paved paths created a unique ambiance. The buzz of the city seemed distant, as if we had stepped into a world reminiscent of a Hayao Miyazaki film.
Families with strollers, couples strolling hand in hand, and individuals walking their dogs filled the park. I noticed several graduates capturing their big day in photographs against the park’s enchanting backdrop.
Eventually, we arrived at the waterfall, where an arched bridge offered an excellent viewpoint. Large, dark fish glided beneath us in the calm water. Though there was an opportunity to climb to the top of the adjacent hill for a broader vista, my headache suggested that perhaps it was best to remain below. I couldn’t help but wonder what the view of the sea might look like from up there. The hill’s summit would also lead down to Mansikkalahti (“Strawberry Bay”) beach and on to Katariina Maritime Park.
Instead, we retraced our steps. I made a mental note to return one day—hopefully healthier—and enjoy a more leisurely exploration.
On our return to the car, we took a slightly different path that led us past intriguing sculptures nestled among the greenery. I was particularly charmed by a whimsical fox sculpture near the waterfall.
The pinnacle of my delight came at the final bridge, where I spotted two sizable pike swimming gracefully below. I find great joy in witnessing these fish in their natural habitat, rather than seeing them thrashing in fear after being caught. We paused on the bridge, enjoying the sight of the pike relishing what looked like a lazy summer afternoon. Based on today’s experience alone, I would rate Kotka as a destination a solid 5 out of 5.
