Tighter Visa Requirements Now in Effect in Finland
As of January 2023, Finland has implemented new visa requirements that travelers must heed before embarking on their journeys to the Nordic nation.
In a recent statement, the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined significant changes for short-term stays. Visitors are now required to demonstrate a minimum of €50 per day for their time in Finland, up from the previous threshold of €30. This adjustment reflects the rising cost of living throughout the country.
“The financial requirement is applicable to visits lasting no longer than 90 days,” the Ministry clarified, underscoring the implications of this decision.
In tandem with these changes, Finland has also adopted Article 14.4 of the EU Visa Code, which introduces increased obligations related to maintenance and accommodation for travelers. The Ministry emphasized that proof of sponsorship can now play a vital role in visa applications. This means that if a Finnish citizen or a resident with a valid permit is willing to financially support a visa applicant, this arrangement could be favorably considered during the visa approval process.
To facilitate this, the inviting party must complete a proof of sponsorship form and include it with the visa application.
Extension of Residence Permits for Ukrainian Refugees
In a separate yet related development, the Finnish Immigration Service announced in January 2022 that all residence permits granted to Ukrainians under temporary protection would automatically be extended until March 4, 2024. This extension allows Ukrainian refugees to confirm their legal residence in Finland and provides them with the right to work.
Additionally, the Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo, recently outlined new measures aimed at enhancing the country’s security and border controls, reflecting ongoing considerations in response to evolving circumstances.
These developments highlight Finland’s efforts to adapt its immigration policies in alignment with current economic realities and regional humanitarian responsibilities.
