I often find myself pondering what it would be like to call some of the captivating places I visit home—each one flirts with the idea, yet I know not everywhere can hold that title.
Take Sydney, for instance. As much as I dream of waking each day with that stunning harbor view, its distance from the rest of the world gives me pause. Similarly, while Istanbul pulsates with life and energy, its vastness can be daunting. Then there’s Reykjavik—a city that feels warm and inviting but might be just a tad too small for my ambitions. And let’s not even discuss mastering the intricacies of the Icelandic language!
As a travel writer based in Chicago, I continually uncover magical destinations across the globe. Having explored nearly 70 countries, here are four locales that frequently captivate my imagination when it comes to considering a move.
Helsinki, Finland
Helsinki enchants with its walkability and efficient public transport, while the airport’s connectivity only enhances its appeal. The tantalizing mix of summer’s extended daylight and lingering sunsets fills every corner of the city with life, not to mention the thriving electronic music, art, and food scenes.
The pervasive sense of contentment is palpable; residents seem to enjoy a quality of life where basic needs are met without struggle.

Singapore
In Singapore, longevity and low crime rates speak volumes about the quality of life. I remember a quiet evening stroll from Marina Bay Sands to my hotel—one where the absence of fear stood out. In a world where mass shootings mar many places, Singapore boasts one of the lowest gun violence rates globally.
Pedestrians are treated with respect; cars even stop for them. With a handful of friends in the city, I’d have a head start on building a community there. Plus, growing up in Texas has made me well-acquainted with Singapore’s tropical heat and humidity.

Lisbon, Portugal
My love affair with Lisbon began in 2011 and deepened with each return. This city’s charming pedestrian streets, affordable boutiques, and breathtaking vistas feel increasingly like a second home. The warmth of its welcoming residents and the endless sunshine offer a balm to the soul.
Unlike my current life in Chicago, winters in Portugal are gentle, making Lisbon a year-round delight. While the cost of living has risen since my initial musings about relocating, it remains significantly more affordable than Chicago, New York, or many other U.S. cities. The robust public healthcare system and vibrant expat community only add to its allure.

Italy
The moment I found myself in a cooking class in Sorrento, marveling at a villa with sweeping sea views, I began to consider a move to Italy. Its price tag was surprisingly modest compared to my New York apartment, and the promise of a profound upgrade in lifestyle was irresistible.
Italy—whether in Rome, Milan, or Naples—feels like a collective exhalation. The focus on quality of life here is refreshing, particularly compared to the relentless pace of life back home. Italians prioritize balance; the pleasant climate and solid healthcare system are enticing. Although the job market can be competitive, my remote work scenario as a writer offers me flexibility.
Several Italian cities beckon—Milan and Sorrento among them—and I eagerly anticipate discovering more.
Wherever I may find my footing, I am certain there would be delectable olive oil, fresh pasta, vibrant arts, and a warmth of spirit in the people.
