SkiExpo Kicks Off Winter at Mall of Tripla

As the chill of winter descends upon Helsingfors, skiing aficionados have much to look forward to this Saturday: the much-anticipated SkiExpo at the Mall of Tripla. This annual event marks the season’s official opening and brings together a vibrant mix of local ski centers and tour operators, showcasing everything the winter sports community has to offer. In a delightful turn of events, Kalle Palander, a familiar face in the skiing world, will be making his return as a narrator, much to the delight of fans.

SkiExpo, now in its fourth year at its current location, has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1978 in Kamppi, Helsinki. Over the decades, the fair evolved through various iterations until it found a steady home at Helsinki Messukeskus from 1985 until 2019. However, the pandemic forced a hiatus, casting doubt on the fair’s future.

In 2022, dedicated volunteers breathed new life into SkiExpo, ensuring its continuation and renewal. “Together with the organizing team, we explored various options—even the possibility of closing down the event,” said Sami Uotila. “However, the commitment from the nation’s major ski centers was unwavering, and many were eager to keep it alive. That made all the difference.”

A Gateway to Winter Thrills

The excitement is palpable as the ski season has already commenced in Levi and Ruka, both of which opened their slopes during the first weekend of October, thanks to preserved snow. These popular centers will also participate in this year’s SkiExpo.

Organized by the Finnish Ski Center Association, STS Alppimatkat, and Vihti Ski, SkiExpo’s future is bright. While Uotila anticipates some growth for the event, he assures attendees that its one-day format will remain intact. “Mall of Tripla has proven to be the perfect setting. As the nights grow longer, interest in winter activities naturally heightens,” he noted.

Free Admission for All

The last event saw an impressive turnout, with an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 visitors exploring the displays. “This is the ideal venue for enthusiasts to kick off their ski season,” STS Alppimatkat representative Harri Kaijanto shared. “You can find great deals on trips, lift tickets, and gear—all while reconnecting with fellow skiing enthusiasts. Entrance is free!”

With over 20 exhibitors slated to showcase their offerings, SkiExpo promises to be a bustling hub of activity.

A Day Full of Events

The agenda for the day is packed with engaging activities on the main stage. Attendees can look forward to presentations on snow safety, demonstrations from seasoned Masters, and even a live feed connecting Helsinki with the thrill of Levi and Ruka.

Coinciding with the event, the Alpine Skiing World Cup kicks off in Sölden, Austria, making it a particularly exciting day for fans. Uotila and Palander will provide commentary during the second round of the women’s giant slalom, marking Palander’s notable return to the mic.

As the countdown to SkiExpo continues, it’s clear that the winter season is about to get a thrilling start. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a newcomer, this is the place to gather, connect, and ignite your passion for all things snow.
