Nestled in the enchanting landscape of Nuuksio, the Finnish Nature Center Haltia is a winter wonderland that captivates both staff and visitors alike. During their breaks, the Finland, Naturally team can be spotted making snow angels right in front of Haltia, while our office dogs revel in the sparkling snowdrifts that blanket the nearby forest. At this moment, Nuuksio National Park resembles a scene pulled straight from a winter fairy tale. A delicate layer of snow has cloaked the trees and frozen lakes, softening sounds and transforming the surroundings into a pristine white canvas. The snow glistens on the branches, while the sun, sometimes peeking through the clouds, adds a touch of magic to this serene landscape.

The stunning photographs featured in this article were captured by our dedicated customer advisor, Maarit, from Elf. Below, you’ll find her tips for enjoying low-threshold winter hiking in Nuuksio, as she shares them with visitors at Haltia’s customer service desk.

Your First Glimpse of Finnish Winter

Nuuksio serves as an excellent introduction to the beauty of Finnish winter, even for those visiting for the first time. Several nature trails of varying lengths begin right outside Haltia, offering an easy way to select a path that matches your comfort level. And if you’re ever in doubt about your clothing or footwear, our customer advisors are available during Haltia’s opening hours to provide helpful advice.

For those feeling adventurous, you can take a step off the marked trails:

— The snow isn’t deep enough to discourage wandering slightly off the main paths. Beneath the snow, the ground is frozen, making walking comfortable as long as you keep an eye out for slippery spots. The powdery snow is light, allowing you to find your own peaceful moment amidst the tranquility of winter.

Exploring the area is still pleasantly manageable.

— Right now, walking remains the easiest option; there’s no need for snowshoes given the current conditions, but if you’re interested, they’re available for rent at the customer service desk.

Keep in mind that while the winter solstice has come and gone, daylight in southern Finland is still limited. If you plan to explore Nuuksio National Park, it’s best to set out around midday.

Trails Just Minutes from Haltia

Strolling along the marked trails is both easy and safe. Well-trodden paths provide a sense of security, and you’re unlikely to find yourself isolated.

— Walking on marked trails is straightforward, and if the idea of venturing off the path feels daunting, Maarit assures you, it’s perfectly fine to stick with the trail.

Here are some great options right next to Haltia:

  • Land tour (2 km)
  • Daystar trail (1.4 km)
  • The child-friendly Secret of Red Melt (0.2 km)
  • Meerlammi rock shelter for confident map readers (a little off the beaten path)
  • The connecting trail to Hawk Pond, measuring 4.6 km one way; you can also choose to walk back and forth as desired.

— Remember, especially during winter, that there are no warm shelters at Haukkalampi. While many trails with campfire sites start there, indoor facilities are lacking, warns Maarit.

One local guideline worth noting is: do not walk on ski tracks. In Finland, this is almost a sacred rule, as many cross-country trails in Nuuksio have clear parallel grooves for skiers.

— That said, some nearby ski trails at Haltia are designated as multi-use routes. These allow for walking on one side, while ski tracks occupy the other.

Dressing for the Occasion

Wintertime in Nuuksio doesn’t demand the extreme gear one might need in the frigid -40°C temperatures found in Lapland. However, temperatures here can drop to -20°C, and even mild frost necessitates appropriate attire for a comfortable outdoor experience. Dressing properly truly enhances your enjoyment of nature. The golden rule is straightforward: layer comfortably with warm, nature-appropriate clothing, and wear warm, high-cut shoes to keep snow at bay.

Here’s a helpful checklist:

  • warm, high-cut shoes
  • long underwear and insulated outdoor pants, ideally wind- and water-resistant
  • a long-sleeved shirt paired with a warm winter jacket
  • windproof gloves, a scarf, and a cozy hat

— I always suggest packing an extra layer in your backpack for those moments when you need it. It’s easy to work up a sweat if you start walking fully layered up! An extra jacket or layer is a wise choice, says Maarit.

If you’re uncertain, Haltia’s customer service can provide an honest evaluation of your gear. The Haltia shop also offers warm Finnish hats and gaiters, making it a perfect spot to pick up beautiful local souvenirs.

After Your Adventure: Warm-Up and Wind Down at Haltia

After a day spent enjoying the crisp winter air, there’s nothing quite like warming up. Haltia’s living room offers a snug retreat to unwind and let that rewarding tiredness settle in after a brisk outdoor excursion. On the upper floor, Restaurant Haltia provides a selection of food, coffee, and delightful treats.

Don’t forget to explore Haltia’s exhibitions, which are a wonderful way to wrap up your day outdoors, especially as dusk falls softly over the winter landscape, inviting you to retreat into the warmth indoors.

Haltia’s living room provides comfortable spaces for relaxation.

Getting There Made Easy

Reaching Haltia is straightforward, whether you choose to drive or use public transportation. By car, the journey from Helsinki takes only about half an hour. If you prefer public transport, take a train to Espoo Center and then hop on bus 245, which will take you close to Haltia. In total, allow about an hour for public travel.
