A Serendipitous Encounter Wins Nature Photography’s Top Prize
The photographer behind this year’s winning photograph stumbled upon his remarkable subject completely by chance.
Ossi Saarinen’s captivating image, entitled Paws, showcases an intimate portrayal of a lynx, focusing specifically on its lush, fur-covered paws. The judges hailed the photograph for its bold departure from the norms of traditional nature photography, labeling it daringly original.
In a moment of thrilling connection with nature, Saarinen found himself unexpectedly close to a lynx, just a few meters away. Unprepared but undeterred, he captured a striking image that highlights the majestic forelegs and fluffy paws of the lynx resting gracefully on a mossy tree trunk.
This year’s competition, organized by the Finnish Nature Photographers’ Association, attracted a remarkable 12,000 entries from over 700 photographers, marking its 45th anniversary with a celebration of creativity and talent in the natural world.
