Embracing Nature’s Serenity at Metsäjärvi
After a restful night following Finnish Nature Day at Kaarnikka, we were eager to delve deeper into the captivating landscapes that surrounded us. Our next adventure took us to the tranquil shores of Metsäjärvi, a small yet enchanting lake nestled in Köyliö, Säkylä—its proximity to Kaarnikka made it an easy choice.
Starting from Kaarnikka, the circular trail spans approximately 5.5 kilometers. Guests at Kaarnikka have the added benefit of setting off right from the cabin’s backyard. However, for those seeking a more direct route, a parking area near the lake significantly shortens the trek to both the cozy lean-to shelter and a reservable hut.
At the Metsäjärvi parking area, families will find a nature trail dubbed the Hympykorenno path, or Dragonfly Trail. At the trailhead, a charming mailbox holds activity booklets for children, transforming the exploration of nature into a delightful journey for young adventurers.
Despite the overcast skies, we were far from alone in our outdoor pursuits. Many locals, too, seemed drawn to Metsäjärvi, reveling in the fresh air and subtle beauty of the landscape.
Unforgettable Features of the Metsäjärvi Trail
The standout features along the Metsäjärvi trail were undoubtedly the thoughtfully crafted lean-to shelter and the reservable hut located at the northeastern edge of the lake. Both structures, inviting and impeccably maintained, serve as perfect rest stops. Although the hut is normally locked, we were fortunate enough to get a sneak peek inside.
Having previously enjoyed a leisurely grilling session at Kaarnikka, we opted to forgo the grill this time, choosing instead to immerse ourselves in the unspoiled surroundings of Metsäjärvi.
Interestingly, between 1946 and 1955, the University of Helsinki operated a cranberry research station near the lake. Today, reports suggest that remnants of American cranberry bushes still linger in the area. If it had been cranberry season, I would have relished the opportunity to forage for these tart treasures. However, I must admit—picking them in October can be a chilly affair, testing the fortitude of both fingers and toes while navigating the bog in rubber boots.
Finding Your Way Around Metsäjärvi
According to the map, a trail encircles the lake, and we eagerly set off to explore it. However, we later learned from local nature enthusiasts that traversing the entire loop is not advisable, as the northwestern part of the lake is designated as a bird sanctuary. Thus, we recommend sticking to the southern and eastern sections of the lake as indicated on Kaarnikka’s map, or retracing our steps back to the parking area after visiting the shelter.
