Discovering the Hidden Gem of Black Mountain in Eastern Helsinki
Nestled in Eastern Helsinki lies a true natural oasis known as Black Mountain, or Mustavuori. Despite its darker name, Mustavuori is a vibrant, green sanctuary just waiting to be explored.
In recent years, the allure of local nature destinations has skyrocketed, as we’ve all turned our attention from far-flung adventures to the scenic beauty nearby. Thankfully, Helsinki boasts remarkable nature spots right on our doorstep. For several years, I’ve made it a point to frequent the forest trails of Mustavuori, immersing myself in the serene embrace of its towering trees. With around seven kilometers of meticulously maintained trails, this expansive area offers a true escape from urban life.
A lap around the designated fitness trail at Mustavuori adds about two kilometers to my run. Out here, I often find myself preferring the natural symphony of chirping birds to the music pouring through my headphones. The allure of this natural backdrop beckons many locals, who flock here for running, walking, and a myriad of outdoor activities. Mountain bikers can often be spotted zipping along narrow trails, while bird watchers, photographers, berry and mushroom pickers, hikers, rock climbers, orienteers, and skiers round out the scene. It’s clear that Mustavuori is a cherished natural refuge, rich in biodiversity and a protected area under Finland’s national grove conservation program and the Natura 2000 initiative.
Over the years, I’ve heard whispers about bear sightings in the area, although my encounters have skewed more toward the snake variety. One particularly memorable jog turned quite exhilarating when I accidentally crossed paths with a sunbathing snake. My reflexes kicked in; I leapt aside while letting out a squeal that likely had nearby hikers laughing.
Another unforgettable moment came when I stumbled upon a deer while jogging. We both froze for a second, equally startled, before darting in opposite directions—a city girl unused to wildlife in the wild.
While on a recent run, I noticed the small parking lot at Mustavuori was bursting with vehicles, prompting me to ponder the area’s deeper significance beyond its enchanting nature. I recalled a family member mentioning Mustavuori’s rich cultural-historical backdrop. Lo and behold, it turns out that Mustavuori is home to one of the best-preserved World War I fortress complexes in Helsinki. After years of blissful ignorance, I felt compelled to embark on a more thorough exploration of this intriguing locale.
As the sun shone brightly that Easter weekend, I decided to don my backpack and delve into the fortresses of Mustavuori. A mere 15-minute stroll from home led me to the entrance of this natural wonder. I took the quaint forest path branching off the main trail and began my ascent toward Östersundom, greeted by fields of blooming blue and white anemones.
Curious to discover more, I veered off the main trail, climbing higher up a slope that turned out to be the remnant of a trench. My adventurous spirit led me to a rock-carved cave, with its massive black entrance beckoning me closer. Yet, mud and puddles obstructed my path, thwarting my desire for a more intimate exploration. I settled for admiring it from a safe distance.
Beyond the cave, a breathtaking gorge carved into the rock awaited. The narrow passage, flanked by mossy walls, was an enchanting sight. Around another bend, I found yet another cave—though it was, in fact, a thirty-meter tunnel with twin openings. With a flashlight in hand, I considered venturing inside, but the changing weather—a sudden cloud cover followed by light hail—prompted me to rethink my plans.
Despite the chilly air, my spirits remained high as I retraced my steps along the beautiful nature trails. The uphill climb warmed me, and I felt invigorated by the day’s adventures.
Mustavuori turned out to be more than just a haven for nature lovers; it is a remarkable blend of rich history, spectacular landscapes, and outdoor excitement. For both young and old, the gorges and caves offer thrills and memories waiting to be made.
