Ah, the charm of Hanko! From the moment I set foot in this delightful summer town, I felt an instant connection. Is there a more enchanting place to spend the warmer months? Hanko had been lingering on my summer wishlist for years, and this week, I finally made that long-held dream a reality. In recent summers, I often found myself escaping to Southeast Asia or the Mediterranean, drawn by the promise of sun-drenched days beneath palm trees. This year, however, the pandemic turned those dreams upside down.
During the lockdown months, we grew accustomed to homestays, camping, and nature hikes. By the start of this summer, the urge to venture out was palpable, and the world outside my door beckoned. With domestic travel once again permitted, it became evident that I needed to escape my familiar surroundings for fresh experiences and vibrant landscapes.
What better destination for a rejuvenating three-day getaway than Hanko? It’s only a VR (virtual reality) ride away! Allow me to share what makes Hanko so special to me. This relaxed yet chic little town exudes a warmth that’s impossible to resist—smiles are contagious here, and happiness seems to linger in the air.
As I wandered its sun-kissed streets, I was greeted by the symphony of chirping birds, the soft caress of the sea breeze, and the rhythmic lapping of waves against the shore. The fine, sandy beaches, stunning seascapes, and lush natural beauty all enveloped me. Quaint boutiques and outdoor cafés lined the streets, enhancing the town’s inviting atmosphere.
Strolling along the coastal avenues felt like a meditation; I marveled at the centuries-old lace villas and sat upon the cliffs, soaking in magnificent views over the sea. Sailboats danced in the harbor, their sails catching the breeze at Itäsatama.
Discoveries in Hanko
There’s no shortage of enjoyable activities and sights for both families and solo travelers in Hanko:
Hanko’s Beautiful Beaches
Hanko boasts a remarkable 130 kilometers of coastline, with over 30 kilometers of sandy beaches. Its recognizable swimming booths draw summertime visitors like bees to honey. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this charming town is home to such extensive stretches of sand, making it an ideal destination for a beach getaway.
The central beaches—Regattanranta, Casinonranta, and Bellevue—offer a serene atmosphere, free from overcrowding. A few kilometers outside the town center lies Tulliniemi beach, with its picturesque sand dunes and gentle winds, creating a blissful crescent stretch where the beach grass sways playfully.
Hanko’s Water Tower and Scenic Vistas
A visit to Hanko wouldn’t be complete without ascending the iconic red water tower. Standing 65 meters high atop stunning cliffs, it’s easily accessible via an elevator. Once at the top, the panoramic views of the city and the endless horizon of the sea take your breath away.
Charming Lace Villas
Walking through Hanko’s quiet streets, I was enchanted by the pastel-hued lace villas, each a historical gem crafted by renowned architects. These lovely wooden structures, some converted into inviting restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts, hold stories from another time.
Hanko Casino
Undoubtedly one of Hanko’s most striking buildings is the Casino, nestled among beautiful beaches. Surrounded by a meticulously maintained garden, vibrant flowers bloom, and the soothing sound of the fountain fills the air. I didn’t indulge in the restaurant offerings during this visit, but it’s certainly on my agenda for next time.
Nature Trails on the Love Path
The Puistovuori area, located adjacent to Hanko Casino’s beach, invites exploration along the nature trail known as Rakkaus polku, or the Love Path. This lovely 1.5-kilometer route artfully blends scenic nature with historical landmarks, featuring cliffs with seascapes, war memorials like the remnants of cannon stations and bunkers, and intriguing geological formations.
Diving into Hanko’s Marina
Hanko is often hailed as a sailor’s paradise, and the bustling Itäsatama marina certainly lives up to that reputation, showcasing luxurious yachts alongside charming eateries and cafes nestled in the red port buildings.
Delightful Summer Boutiques
The town is dotted with delightful summer boutiques, where shoppers can unearth unique finds ranging from summer attire to tasteful home decor, each with its own story to tell.
Tulliniemi Nature Reserve
For a taste of adventure, I rented a mint-green Jopo bike and pedaled to Tulliniemi, a mere three kilometers away. Here, you can traverse the southernmost tip of mainland Finland along the Tulliniemi nature reserve trail. As I reached the rocky outcrop where the promontory meets the sea, the refreshing breeze and crashing waves filled me with a sense of exhilaration.
A Day Trip to Bengtskär Lighthouse
My final day in Hanko culminated in a long-anticipated trip to Bengtskär lighthouse. I hopped aboard the Marine Lines vessel from the eastern harbor at 11 a.m. The journey, filled with rolling waves, felt endless, but in reality, we reached the tallest lighthouse in the Nordics in just 1.5 hours.
The Bengtskäri lighthouse, with its imposing stone facade, steadfastly rises above the tumultuous sea. Climbing the 252 steps to the lighthouse tower offers a reward of breathtaking views—an unforgettable experience, particularly for those who conquer their fear of heights on the way up.
Where to Stay
Many of Hanko’s enchanting lace villas operate as charming guesthouses, providing an idyllic seaside lodging experience. As I explored my options, staying in a standard hotel just didn’t appeal to me when the allure of a historic villa beckoned.
I opted for the delightful Pensionat Villa Tellina—the oldest boarding house in Hanko and a true architectural gem. Nestled atop the cliffs at the edge of downtown Regattanranta, this pastel-green villa offered serene views paired with a rich breakfast included for just €60 per night. While accommodations at guesthouses may differ from standard hotels, the experience is nothing short of magical.
Tip: Book your stay well in advance during the summer months; options fill up quickly. For a comprehensive view of available accommodations, check the Visit Hanko website and book directly with the establishments.
Getting to Hanko
Located in Finland’s southwest corner, Hanko is a less than two-hour, 130-kilometer journey from Helsinki. While bus services are infrequent, you can easily reach Hanko by taking a train from Helsinki with a change in Karjaa.
In conclusion, Hanko is a treasure trove of experiences just waiting to be discovered. I fell completely in love with this charming town and will undoubtedly return soon. Again and again!
