Step out from the front yard of the Finnish Nature Center Haltia, and you find yourself instantly immersed in the enchanting Wilds of Nuuksio. With winter’s snow blanketing the landscape, it’s an ideal moment to strap on some snowshoes. A carefully marked three-kilometer trail beckons in the surrounding nature, traversing its own paths and leading to the breathtaking Maahisenkierros viewpoint.

Haltia’s equipment rental shop is well-stocked with snowshoes and even child carrier backpacks, making it easy for families to embark on their snowy adventure together. To ensure you have everything you need upon arrival, it’s wise to reserve your equipment online in advance.

The snowshoe trail begins just across the road from Haltia. Marked with vibrant orange ribbons, the route winds through a hilly terrain that offers a moderately challenging experience. However, it’s friendly enough for beginners as well, and at a leisurely pace, you can complete the circuit in one to two hours. Naturally, your time might stretch if you find yourself lured into the untouched snow along the way. For the best experience, it’s recommended to walk the loop in a counterclockwise direction.

As you travel, take a moment to soak in the serene beauty of the old-growth forest in its winter attire. The trail meanders through habitats where Siberian Flying squirrels make their homes, winds between gnarled pine trees perched on rocky outcrops, and offers glimpses of the tranquil Lakeasuo bog. You’ll even find trails etched by the gentle movements of deer. A particularly picturesque stop is the viewing platform, which provides sweeping views over Nuuksio’s Lake Pitkäjärvi and the surrounding woodlands. While there isn’t a public campfire site along the route itself, you can warm up at the public lean-to shelter in Haltia’s event field before or after your trek.

If you’re new to snowshoeing or are traveling with younger or older members in your group, this trail is an excellent choice. Should you find the loop growing lengthy midway, there are several public trails that can lead you back to Haltia. Conversely, for those eager for a longer adventure, experienced map readers can explore additional paths—just be mindful of your own limits. For those seeking more extensive options, Haltia’s customer service can provide insight into extended snowshoeing routes available in Nuuksio.
