Just a short drive—about 20 minutes—from Mariehamn nestled by the sea amidst a tranquil forest, you’ll find the enchanting ruins of Lemböte Chapel. This medieval gem has been thoughtfully restored, and during the summer months, it still hosts services and various events. Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds, and while the chapel is typically locked, you can catch a glimpse of its single-room interior through the iron-barred door. We had the pleasure of visiting this serene spot on a quiet November day.

We were enjoying a leisurely November weekend on Åland’s main island, which felt pleasantly calm and almost deserted. After arriving on Friday afternoon, we aimed for one last jaunt before catching our ferry just after noon on Sunday. As we drove towards Långnäs, a roadside sign caught my eye: Lemböte Chapel. With curiosity piqued, we decided to make a stop.
The scenic road twisted through the November landscape, passing quaint farms and fluttering Åland flags in celebration of Father’s Day. One house featured two large cats casting us disapproving glances as we drove past. My husband, an ardent cat lover, had to resist the urge to stop and befriend those aloof felines.
Upon reaching the turn for Kapellstigen road, we found a parking area right at the junction. From there, a gentle walk of approximately 700 meters leads to the chapel. The trail, sometimes muddy and narrow, ultimately ascends through the forest and features a side path that leads to a picnic table, a perfect spot to pause and soak in the surroundings.
The chapel dates back to the 16th century, with its stone walls reaching nearly a meter in thickness. I was instantly struck by the building’s tasteful restoration, enhanced by the lingering scent of tar. Summer services continue to be held here, connecting the past with the present.
Lemböte: Medieval Sailors’ Chapel
- Lemböte’s seafarers’ Chapel was constructed in the Middle Ages, serving as a vital stop on the historic sailing route between Denmark and the Baltic states.
- Its location offered three favorable landing spots for ships, making it an ideal rest stop for weary travelers.
- Sailors would come here to pray and perhaps leave offerings for a safe journey.
- The chapel’s single room measures approximately 7 x 3.5 meters, with walls primarily formed from grey stone.
- The ruins were restored in 1892, ensuring the preservation of this historical site.
- The area is legally protected, safeguarding its rich heritage.
Surrounded by a spacious yard encircled by a low stone wall composed of natural rocks, the chapel stands proudly amidst a beautiful pine forest. The rugged landscape, abundant with stones, evokes the spirit of Lapland, particularly in the pervasive silence that enveloped us—there was not a soul in sight.
The informative sign at the site describes Lemböte’s historical significance as a boat-accessible haven for sailors journeying between Denmark and the Baltics during the Middle Ages. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Olav and forms part of the St Olav Waterway pilgrimage route.
While independent visitors typically can’t enter the chapel, a peek through the large barred door offers a glimpse into its modest interior.
We took a moment to enjoy the tranquility of the site, completely alone in the serene landscape. The encounter with the cats felt worlds away, as through the trees, we glimpsed the sea and, across the bay, the silhouette of Mariehamn.
Tip! As someone who tends to be budget-conscious, I almost made the mistake of visiting the island without a car. Fortunately, my father advised me to check the logistics—and it turned out that bringing our car was significantly less expensive than parking at the Port of Turku. Having a vehicle on Åland opens up a wealth of experiences beyond just Mariehamn.
