In Turku, a picturesque city in southwestern Finland, young residents are stepping up in remarkable ways to champion climate action. Notably, Turku stands out as the sole Finnish participant in the global Youth Climate Action Fund program, generously supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
With a commitment of 111,000 euros, the City of Turku has sponsored 29 innovative climate projects throughout 2024 and 2025. These initiatives have engaged thousands of young locals, drawing them into a vibrant tapestry of climate-related events, campaigns, and training sessions. The results are evident throughout the city, where workshops, events, climate-focused art, and hands-on projects have become part of everyday life.
Among the standout efforts is the Puhurin Pojat Scout Troop, which successfully constructed a battery and solar power system for their boat, allowing them to generate electricity without relying on a diesel engine. Meanwhile, the organization HangFlow has delved into sustainable consumption and the principles of the circular economy through creative exploration, community interaction, and practical activities. “When you realize the true impact of consumption on the environment, a choice becomes unavoidable: persist as we are or alter our path. We chose to change,” reflects Hannaneh Mahmoudian of HangFlow.
Yet, the ripples of these efforts reach far beyond the borders of Turku. The Youth Climate Action Fund serves as a vital connector, linking cities around the world and bridging the gap between the daily actions of young people and global climate policy.
