For years, the Ruostejärvi Recreation Area was a place I drove past, promising myself I’d one day take a moment to stop. Situated near Iso-Melkutin—a favored spot for summer snorkeling—I had yet to explore this beautiful enclave until now.
As I pulled into the nearly deserted parking lot on a crisp January Saturday, I marveled at the impressive entrance adorned with informational boards. We set off along the 1.2-kilometer Kurjenpolku loop trail, opting to extend our adventure with a quick detour to Kurjenniemi, where a bridge spans the narrow isthmus.
The journey began on boardwalks tracing the trail, recently blanketed by freshly fallen snow. The serene sound of our footsteps blended seamlessly with the gentle rustling of the wind through the trees, offering a peaceful contrast to the chilly -11°C air.
Before long, our path led us to the shores of Myllylahti Bay. While the trail turned left at a junction, my curiosity drew me to a nearby forest stream. To my delight, the water flowed freely, its gentle bubbling a reminder of summer’s warmth. We paused on a bridge, taking a moment to absorb the beauty before returning to the Kurjenpolku loop.
Walking along the shoreline path was a delight. The combination of forest and water provided a soothing ambiance, and I couldn’t help but admire the abundance of labrador tea lining the shore. It sparked thoughts of the sunset’s glow in summer—this spot would surely be a haven for early risers.
The tranquility was punctuated by mouse tracks in the snow, remnants of creatures that traverse these peaceful woods. Yet, human footprints were mere memories, softened by the latest snowfall.
As we reached another junction, we once again veered right toward Kurjenniemi. The scenery was breathtaking; a narrow strip of land flanked by the lake on either side was a reminder of nature’s splendor.
The bridge delineating Myllylahti Bay and the broader Lake Ruostejärvi offered stunning views, its icy surface transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland. Though it resembled more of a frozen field than a flowing waterway, I could easily envision the beauty it would hold in warmer months, reminiscent of the enchanting Pususilta bridge in Punkaharju.
The wind picked up as we crossed, a sharp reminder of the season’s chill. Once we reached the isthmus separating the two bodies of water, we paused to enjoy the quiet before heading back, retracing our steps along the Kurjenpolku trail.
Our return journey brought us back to the beach, where even in the midst of winter, the labrador tea appeared more vibrant than before, a testament to the lushness that awaits in warmer weather. The swimming beach, though frozen in slumber, whispered promises of summer fun with its shallow depths and rust-colored waters.
As we neared the parking area once more, we were met by an inviting map showing a wider walking path that would have extended our exploration. This small winter outing left me with a sense of longing to return—perhaps for the brilliant autumn foliage or to bask in the enchanting atmosphere of a summer evening when the labrador tea is in full bloom.
For those seeking a slice of tranquility amid nature, the Ruostejärvi Recreation Area is an experience that shouldn’t be missed.
