Discovering Tranquility at The Baro: Finland’s Boutique Retreat
On our journey through the stunning boutique hotels of Finland, we find ourselves drawn to The Baro, nestled just a short drive from Billnäs Gård, within the enchanting Barosund region of Inkoo. This hidden gem is perched on a magnificent and remote island, where nature reigns supreme.
When Jussi Paavoseppa acquired this wild expanse of heavily wooded terrain, his vision was clear: to create a series of wooden cabins that would harmoniously blend with their surroundings. Designed as prefabricated units elevated above the ground, they embody a philosophy of respect for the environment. “The idea,” Paavoseppa reflects, “is that we are just visitors here, and we want to honor this beautiful setting.” It’s a sentiment that resonates throughout the resort, where twelve charred wooden cabins seamlessly intertwine with lichen-draped trees, each carefully placed on plinths to safeguard the delicate moss-covered earth below.
Each cabin at The Baro is a dream come true for anyone seeking the ultimate forest retreat. Vast glass windows frame enchanting views of the forest and the shimmering sea, with the occasional boat gliding through the narrow channel, serving as the only reminder of life beyond this serene haven. Crafted with ecological integrity in mind, these cabins utilize chemical-free solid wood logs insulated with eco wool. The design prioritizes an unobstructed view, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of the surroundings. Inside, the dark, cocooning spaces are illuminated by bespoke fixtures by Hakan Langstedt, handmade in Helsinki, complementing the natural daylight that pours in. A wood-burning stove and a pair of comfortable leather chairs create an inviting setting for cozy evenings, perfect for watching the flames dance as darkness envelops the forest.
The Baro encourages a deep connection with nature, offering rentals for bikes to explore the myriad trails that weave through the woods. For those seeking a more guided experience, options for “forest bathing” walks and fishing trips can be arranged. Of course, no Finnish retreat would be complete without a sauna. Another elegantly designed black cabin offers sweeping views of the nearby island of Orslandet through its large glass windows, where guests might catch a glimpse of seals surfacing in the water. A free public ferry provides easy access to Orslandet, along with countless nature trails waiting to be discovered.
In this secluded paradise, The Baro invites you to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and fully immerse yourself in the serene and silent embrace of nature.
