Helsinki’s traditional Christmas Market at Senate Square shattered records this year, drawing in an impressive 650,000 visitors—up from 600,000 last year. This bustling market, a fixture in the city’s holiday calendar, wrapped up its festivities last Sunday.
Organizers attribute the surge in foot traffic, in part, to the city’s increasing appeal as a tourist destination. Jenni Pajunen, chair of the board for the Helsinki Events Foundation, noted that with this growing popularity, the market may now hold the title of Finland’s largest public event.
Food played a starring role in this year’s success, featuring over 100 small producers and culinary businesses. Among the standout offerings were Korean-style reindeer corndogs and delectable crumbles, which rapidly became crowd favorites.
Over the course of just three weeks, the market served up more than 60,000 bowls of rice porridge, while visitors indulged in over 85,000 cups of steaming hot mulled wine, according to the Helsinki Events Foundation.
While the Senate Square market may be closing, festive celebrations will continue throughout Helsinki until Epiphany. Just a block south, the Manta Christmas Market at Havis Amanda Square will remain open until January 6, featuring delightful food experiences and lively performances.
On St. Stephen’s Day, December 26, guests are invited to partake in traditional dances starting at 6:00 PM, promising additional joy and community spirit during this holiday season.
