In a recent statement from Brussels, Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasized that allies should refrain from exerting undue pressure on each other or advocating for the annexation of a partner nation’s territory.

The ongoing diplomatic friction stemming from U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to acquire Greenland has cast a shadow over relations between the EU and the United States, as noted by Prime Minister Orpo.
In a briefing after his discussions with fellow EU leaders in Brussels, Orpo acknowledged that the true extent of this strain may only become clear with time.
He expressed concern that the situation remains unresolved, with no clear timeline emerging about when it might be addressed.
“However, the most urgent crisis has been mitigated,” Orpo remarked, particularly referencing the looming threat of a trade conflict between the EU and the U.S.
Orpo further reiterated that allies must not pressure one another or advocate for the annexation of another nation’s territory.
“The tone directed towards Europe has also drawn considerable attention,” he added, reflecting on the broader implications of diplomatic language.
During a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump criticized Europe, suggesting it is “not heading in the right direction” and that various countries have become unrecognizable due to their immigration policies.
He also claimed that issues such as immigration and the transition to sustainable energy investment are obstructing Europe’s growth.
Ukraine Honors Orpo
In a separate development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Prime Minister Orpo will receive one of Ukraine’s highest distinctions—the 2nd Class Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise.
This honor recognizes Orpo’s efforts in bolstering collaboration between Finland and Ukraine, as highlighted by Zelensky’s remarks on continued support for Ukraine.
Former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin was also recognized by Ukraine, receiving the 1st Class Order of Princess Olga for her steadfast support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
