Finland’s Baby Box Gets an Upgrade and Increased Value
The value of Finland’s beloved maternity package, commonly known as the baby box, is set to rise to 210 euros.
This change comes as part of an effort to enhance Finland’s maternity benefits, responding directly to the needs voiced by families. The iconic baby box, known for its thoughtful contents designed to support new parents, will include more clothing that caters specifically to newborns.
Veera Petäjä, a designer at Kela, the Finnish benefits agency, explained to the Finnish news agency STT that parents have been requesting a broader selection of smaller garments to better assist them during those crucial early weeks with their baby. Many have noted that the current offerings tend to be better suited for slightly older infants, prompting this significant update.
Starting from April 1, 2026, families whose due date or official placement date for an adopted child falls on or after this date will be eligible for the increased maternity benefit of 210 euros.
For those who choose the existing baby box, valued at 170 euros, there is good news: during this transition, they will receive an additional 40 euros to help bridge the gap.
The revamped baby box is anticipated to debut this autumn, continuing a long-standing tradition that dates back to 1938. This initiative underscores Finland’s commitment to supporting new families in a way that adapts to their needs.
In a landscape where parenting resources continually evolve, the enhancements to the baby box reflect a responsiveness that families have long appreciated.
