In an age where artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly permeates our daily lives—from drafting emails to managing credit card benefits—it stands to reason that travelers are also turning to these tools to aid in their trip planning. After all, why not enlist AI when it can help unearth hidden gems or streamline the logistics of vacation planning?
I must confess: I was initially hesitant. To me, travel is fundamentally a human endeavor, enriched by personal connection and unique experiences. My reservations about AI extend beyond its limitations; I also worry about its environmental impact, its potential to diminish our critical thinking skills, and the uncertainty of an AI bubble that could burst at any moment.
Yet, the reality is undeniable: AI is here to stay. With my own journey to Finnish Lapland just weeks away, I decided to embrace the trend and evaluate five popular AI tools, rigorously comparing their recommendations against my extensive pre-trip preparations. While these platforms often tout advanced paid features, I opted to explore their free offerings to maintain a fair comparison.
The findings? Each chatbot presented its own mix of strengths and weaknesses, with none quite matching the depth and personalization of my own plans. However, I did uncover some valuable suggestions, particularly when it came to restaurants and securing reservations. When it came to flights and vacation rentals, though, the results were less impressive.
And as it turned out, one chatbot distinctly stood out from the crowd.
The Prompt
AI chatbots operate best when given clear, well-structured information.
With this in mind, I crafted a detailed prompt for my impending trip. I understand that refining this skill is a work in progress. In essence, the more context and dialogue you provide to a chatbot, the better the outcome is likely to be.
Having struggled with finding real-time business class flights in the past, I sidestepped that challenge. My trip was already meticulously arranged around securing Finnair business class tickets from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Helsinki (HEL). I simply stated the departure airports and allowed the bots to work their magic from there.
Here’s the command I entered for each AI:
Plan me a trip for four adults and an infant from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to Finnish Lapland sometime before Christmas in December. We want to stay for seven to ten days, spend at least one night in Helsinki, and visit Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi. We are open to either hotels or vacation rentals and seek recommendations for daytime activities as well as dinner options each night. Our adventurous group enjoys snowshoeing, winter activities, and experiencing a Finnish sauna. Finally, we want enough downtime daily for the infant.
It was crucial to highlight that we were traveling with an infant to prevent the bots from over-scheduling our days. Our itinerary was anchored around Rovaniemi and Helsinki, and I simply nudged the bots toward our interests in outdoor activities and dining.
Next, I unleashed the bots and conducted this informal experiment using five widely recommended AI chatbots. This list is not exhaustive; many other platforms exist, including some specialized travel tools that enthusiasts swear by.
Here’s how these five major chatbots fared:
ChatGPT
As the most recognized name in AI, ChatGPT is often hailed by travelers for its trip planning capabilities. However, like its peers, it falls short when it comes to nailing down flights or vacation rentals.
What I appreciated about ChatGPT was its citation of sources directly in the search results, allowing users to verify information or conduct further research. It also provided multiple options for activities and dining, which added a delightful layer of flexibility.
In preparing my itinerary, the bot adeptly considered daylight hours, especially critical in a December Finnish landscape where sunlight is scarce—a key factor for those hunting the Northern Lights. The day-by-day itinerary was well-organized, and I was particularly pleased with its attempt to factor in nap times for the infant, even if the whims of a baby hardly adhere to a strict schedule!
Additionally, ChatGPT suggested ways to adjust the trip to maximize time in Helsinki, along with a smart booking checklist detailing which dinners required reservations and where to book sauna sessions.
Bottom line: ChatGPT delivered a functional itinerary, falling short only in vital sectors like flights and rentals. Nevertheless, it offered a useful framework, ideal for those looking to kickstart their travel plans.
Gemini
Google’s Gemini is another prominent player in the AI arena, offering a more polished, organized itinerary in a visually appealing format.
It did require a little prompting to yield detailed recommendations initially; its first responses felt quite basic. However, the standout feature of Gemini was the “Export to Sheets” button, which allowed me to generate a Google Sheet of my trip—a nice touch for spreadsheet enthusiasts.
While it lacked direct booking links and initially provided minimal specifics, Gemini came through with useful tips, especially for traveling with an infant. When prompted to check flight prices, it cleverly leveraged Google Flights to pull in options—though I found the results lacking in both aesthetics and pricing.
Similarly, it connected users to Google Hotels listings for accommodations.
Bottom line: Gemini provided a solid foundation with a clean, easy-to-digest layout. Ideal for those who enjoy managing the finer details themselves, it serves as a strong starting point.
Claude
I hadn’t previously explored Claude, but I was pleasantly surprised by its sleek design and user-friendly functionality. The two-column layout—one summarizing, the other diving deep—was particularly impressive.
Claude emerged as the most budget-conscious option, consistently reminding me of estimated costs, culminating in a grand total at the end of the itinerary.
It paid remarkable attention to detail, even suggesting transit options others overlooked. While it too struggled with flight details, Claude excelled in its day-by-day breakdown, noting which restaurants required advance reservations.
Most notably, it provided a comprehensive packing list tailored to our visit, including essentials for the infant.
Ultimately, Claude’s meticulous attention to budgeting and thoughtful itineraries set it apart from the competition.
Bottom line: Claude impressed me with an abundance of ideas and tips, coupled with a unique line-by-line cost breakdown that added immense value.
Deepseek
While Deepseek might lack the stylish appearance of its competitors, it offers greater specificity and useful insights for travelers—like baby equipment rental options, which is a thoughtful touch.
Its day-by-day itinerary mirrored that of the other chatbots but fell short on personalization. However, it did provide particulars about tour operators and grocery store options to help those looking to cut costs.
Bottom line: Deepseek offered a competent itinerary but didn’t stand out in terms of design or creativity.
Microsoft CoPilot
CoPilot, like ChatGPT, effectively cites sources within its suggestions, which I found helpful. Its formatting was also appealing, providing useful context without jumping straight to the itinerary.
CoPilot excelled in offering multiple options for activities and meals, surpassing its competitors in flexibility. It addressed our needs as a traveling family by providing practical advice on pacing the day and offering tips for managing outings with an infant.
Bottom line: CoPilot’s clear citations and numerous options highlighted its strengths, although it fell short of the top spot.
& The Winner Is…
After careful consideration, the standout travel planning chatbot turned out to be Claude. Let’s be honest: I know precisely what I want from this trip—insights far beyond what any AI could ever replicate. My long-standing relationships with my traveling companions and the familial tie to the infant meant that I had curated an exceptional itinerary.
While these AI tools can certainly streamline aspects of planning, none can completely substitute for human touch. We secured vacation rentals rather than hotels—an area where chatbots seem to struggle. Similarly, our preference for flying business class using points is another shortcoming these tools face.
Despite their limitations, I was impressed by how well some of the chatbots could devise day programs in an unfamiliar destination. Their restaurant recommendations and reservation booking timeliness were particularly notable—strategies I intend to lean on in future travel planning.
In my view, Claude offered the most robust experience. Its exceptional focus on budgeting, combined with a comprehensive list of resources—like packing suggestions, local transportation options, and weather forecasting tools—made a significant impact.
Its dual-column format, summarizing key information alongside comprehensive details, enhanced usability, allowing for easy navigation of what one might want to focus on at any moment.
While I don’t expect any AI chatbot to fully replace the role of a personal planner anytime soon, I do plan to integrate Claude into my travel routines for inspiration, budgeting, and enhancing existing itineraries. With my upcoming Lapland trip on the horizon, I’m already considering its packing lists, restaurant recommendations, and booking insights as valuable resources.
Bottom Line
At its core, travel is a deeply personal experience. That’s why I hesitated to rely on AI until now, and why my findings may resonate differently with others. While Claude emerged as my preferred tool, it’s crucial to remember that no AI chatbot is a comprehensive solution for all aspects of travel planning. Avoid using them for flights and rentals, as those remain significant blind spots.
However, in crafting itineraries, generating packing lists, recommending eateries, and organizing logistics, these tools serve as efficient resources, allowing us to plan smarter—and perhaps a bit faster.
