The Unconventional Choice: Leo Tuuva and His Unique Racket
In the world of elite hockey, players typically adhere to a traditional palette when it comes to their equipment. However, 19-year-old Leo Tuuva of Rauma Luko stands apart, cooling off at Finland’s under-20 training camp in Duluth’s Amsoil Arena, with a racket that is decidedly off-white—a rarity among his peers.
“What’s the story behind that?”
With a casual shrug, Tuuva responds, “There’s really no special backstory. I had to choose a racket last summer and I picked this one. The white color caught my eye; it looks stylish, and I just think it’s great.” Despite his flourish in aesthetics, he acknowledges, “It has worked well for me, though scoring has been a bit tougher lately.”
On the Ice and Off
Tuuva has participated in 23 SM league matches this season, gathering 3 goals and 6 assists—a respectable tally for a budding player. Yet, his choice of equipment has raised eyebrows among opponents and occasionally within his own team. “No one has exactly called me out on it,” he says, a hint of amusement crossing his face.
A Team with Spirit
Iltalehti has closely observed the Finnish team’s training camp for the past three days, and the camaraderie among the players is palpable. They compete fiercely but never lose sight of the humor in their interactions.
“We have a really good team spirit here,” Tuuva shares. “We’ve got a skilled and versatile crew, and we know how to defend together. We’re united, and that matters a lot.” His voice carries a sense of confidence as he asserts that the Young Lions aim for the World Cup final: “Yes, it’s possible, and that’s our goal. Anything less would be seen as a loss for us.”
For Tuuva, this under-20 World Cup also marks his first and last opportunity, as next year he will age out of the category.
Aiming High
As a player in the SM league, expectations ride on Tuuva’s shoulders. “Right now, I’m part of a top line,” he explains. “I want to be on the ice when it matters most and make an impact. Producing results is my aim.”
At just 15, Tuuva left his home in South Karelia to hone his skills with the Luko organization in Rauma—a move he reflects on fondly. Even though he isn’t yet signed to an NHL team, he plays under the watchful eyes of scouts in Minnesota. “I want to make it to North America; the NHL is my ultimate goal,” he states earnestly. “Before that, though, I need to step up in my league and excel at this World Cup.”
Upcoming Matches
Finland is gearing up for several key matchups in the World Cup, with games scheduled against Denmark, Latvia, Czech Republic, and Canada. With Tuuva’s determination and the strong spirit of his teammates, the road ahead looks promising.
As these young athletes prepare, all eyes will be on them—not just for their performance on the ice, but for the potential that each player, including Tuuva, represents for the future of Finnish hockey.
