Former Politician Timo Vornanen Resigns from Police Position Following Assaut Conviction
Timo Vornanen, once a prominent member of the Finns Party and a seasoned police officer, has recently faced significant legal troubles. Found guilty of assault, making unlawful threats, and various firearms offenses, Vornanen’s conviction stems from a late-night incident outside a karaoke bar in April 2024.
Following this troubling turn of events, Vornanen has resigned from his role as a senior constable with the Eastern Finland Police Department. He had previously taken a leave of absence from the force upon his election to parliament in spring 2023.
In a candid Facebook post, Vornanen shared insights into his decision, revealing that his attorney informed him of impending dismissal from the department. “After all these years, I believe it’s best to step away voluntarily rather than face dismissal,” he reflected, acknowledging his three-decade service in law enforcement.
Effective January 1, 2026, Vornanen’s resignation comes at a time of considerable upheaval. Just last week, Helsinki District Court sentenced him to an eight-month suspended prison term and mandated payment of €17,000 in compensation for his offenses.
The repercussions of the incident have been swift; he was expelled from the Finns Party but continues to serve as an independent member of parliament. Despite the circumstances, Vornanen has made it clear that he plans to appeal the court’s ruling, signaling that his legal battles are far from over.
