Discover the essence of traditional Finnish culture by experiencing an authentic dry sauna at the doorstep of Nuuksio National Park, just a short 35-minute journey from Helsinki. At Saivo, located within the Finnish Nature Center Haltia, you can relax and partake in age-old sauna rituals while absorbing the serene beauty of Finland’s natural landscapes.

What should I know before my visit?

Planning ahead is key. To ensure a smooth experience, make sure to book your sauna session in advance—this can be done online, over the phone at +35840 163 6200, or via email. Consider whether you’d like to rent towels, order refreshments, or if you wish to reserve the sauna beyond Haltia’s regular opening hours. Early reservations are highly encouraged to secure your preferred timing and services.

What can I expect upon arrival at Saivo?

Your adventure begins at Haltia’s customer service desk, where you’ll receive your key to Saivo. A standard reservation, without any additional services (like meals), includes a quintessential Finnish sauna complete with a well-heated electric stove, shower and dressing facilities, and a private lounge equipped with an outdoor viewing terrace. If you’ve opted for towel or shower sandal rentals, they will be waiting for you in the dressing room.

Inside the lounge, you’ll find a compact kitchenette stocked with drinking glasses and fresh, high-quality tap water. All facilities—except the viewing terrace—are exclusively yours for the duration of your sauna rental, ensuring a private and intimate experience. Supplies like washing products and disposable sauna seat covers are also provided for your convenience.

How should I prepare before entering the sauna?

As you get ready for your sauna experience, undress in the dressing room, keeping in mind that the door remains locked, and your belongings will be safe. It’s important to hydrate well before entering the sauna, as you’ll be losing fluids through sweating. A thorough shower before your sauna session not only enhances your experience but also prepares you to enter with damp skin for optimal comfort.

Enjoy high-quality Finnish washing products in Saivo’s shower.

What’s the dress code in the sauna?

In Finland, sauna etiquette typically favors nudity. However, in mixed groups where participants may not be closely acquainted, using a towel or swimsuit can be a considerate choice. Shower sandals are also available for rent if you prefer. While some sauna-goers enjoy wearing a sauna hat, it is purely a matter of personal preference.

How should I sit in the sauna, and what is the purpose of the sauna seat cover?

Keep the sauna door closed during your bathing session to retain steam and heat. When choosing where to sit, keep in mind that the upper bench is the hottest, while the lower one offers a cooler environment. The seat covers are small mats designed to keep the benches clean; you can use the disposable covers provided to enhance hygiene.

The upper bench radiates the most heat. If it becomes too intense, simply move down to a cooler level.

How do I control the sauna’s heat?

You can modify the heat level by pouring water over the hot stones of the sauna heater—a practice known as “throwing steam.” Using the ladle and water bucket provided, pour cautiously, starting with one ladle and observing how the warmth develops. Remember that the stones are extremely hot, so handle with care.

How do I gauge the perfect level of löyly?

If the air feels comfortably humid and the warmth envelopes you evenly, you’ve poured just the right amount of löyly. Should the air become stifling or your skin start to sting, you might have added too much humidity. In that case, consider moving down to a lower bench or stepping out momentarily to cool off. The ideal amount can vary, so adjusting based on personal preference and group comfort is encouraged.

What’s the recommended duration for sauna sessions?

Sauna sessions typically last between 10 to 15 minutes. That said, there’s no strict guideline—some may prefer shorter stays while others may linger longer. Listen to your body; if you feel overheated or dizzy, it’s time to step out for a breather. Remember to hydrate with water during these cooling breaks.

Is it acceptable to talk in the sauna?

The sauna serves as a space for relaxation, and the atmosphere can vary with the company. Light conversation among friends or colleagues is perfectly normal; however, some may prefer quiet contemplation. Respecting each other’s preferences is part of the sauna tradition.

Can I eat or drink while sauna bathing?

Eating inside the sauna is frowned upon, but staying hydrated is crucial. You’ll find drinking water available in the lounge, complete with glasses for your use. Remember that hydration can be done outside the sauna itself—enjoy your water during your cooling sessions.

What’s the best way to cool off?

Cooling down between sauna sessions is not just customary; it enhances the experience. Saivo’s private lounge provides direct access to the terrace, where you can step outside and enjoy fresh air. Just a reminder: if you’ve opted for a nude sauna experience, it’s best to wrap a towel around yourself while enjoying the outdoors!

If you prefer to relax indoors, the lounge serves as a perfect retreat. And be sure to take your key with you when stepping outside to avoid locking yourself out.

From the terrace, you can admire the stunning scenery of Nuuksio while enjoying your refreshments or personal snacks.

Is swimming allowed?

From the terrace, you can access stairs leading down to Lake Nuuksion Pitkäjärvi, where swimming is permitted during warmer months—provided the lake isn’t frozen. Please note that private piers in the area are off-limits.

In summer, the lake temperature can be a refreshing 20°C, but as autumn approaches, it cools significantly. If you decide to brave cold-water swimming, always do so with a companion for safety—a common Finnish practice. And don’t forget your key to avoid being locked out!

Can I enjoy multiple sauna sessions?

Absolutely! Multiple short sessions interspersed with cool-downs on the terrace or in the lounge are recommended. Your reserved two-hour time slot allows ample opportunity for several rounds.

Stay refreshed with clean, drinkable water available in Saivo’s kitchenette.

What should I do after my sauna experience?

When you’ve enjoyed your time in the sauna or if your session is nearing its end, rinse, dry off, and get dressed.

After your sauna session: What next?

How do I prepare to leave the sauna?

The individual who made the reservation is tasked with handling light clean-up after use—such as collecting any trash and ensuring the area is tidy.

What happens once I leave the sauna?

After your sauna session, feel free to relax in the lounge or cool off on the viewing terrace if there’s time left in your reservation. Ensure the area is tidy before you depart, and don’t forget to return the key to Saivo at the customer service desk.

What about rented towels or shower sandals?

If you’ve rented towels or sandals, please leave them in the dressing room after your session.

Can I combine sauna bathing with meetings or outdoor excursions?

Certainly! Saivo’s sauna makes for an excellent conclusion to meetings, team-building days, nature excursions, or even press trips. Haltia offers a variety of services to cater to your needs—a quintessential Finnish day could include a nature walk, indulging in campfire crepes, and enjoying a sauna experience.

Why not book a guided hike alongside your sauna session? Immerse yourself in Nuuksio’s wild nature for an even deeper experience.
