Nestled in Turku, Ruissalo is an island that offers a delightful retreat for nature enthusiasts. On a recent afternoon, we set out to explore two contrasting environments: the serene University of Turku Botanical Garden and the rugged coastal area of Kuuva, just a few kilometers apart. The unpredictable weather only heightened our experience, shifting dramatically from the warmth of the tropical zones we would later discover.
As we arrived at the parking lot for Kuuva, we turned to Google Maps for guidance. It directed us accurately, though it could have led us a bit too far along Kuuvantie. Fortunately, the parking area is well-marked both on the map and onsite. We parked amid a scattered array of small clouds drifting across the otherwise brilliant blue sky.
After some exploration, we found an information board near the junction by the parking lot. It featured a map of the surrounding area along with signposts guiding us to the nature trail. The loop trail allows visitors to venture toward the tip of the peninsula and then return along a smaller road, making for a leisurely circuit of about two kilometers.
The nature trail wound through a picturesque forest, where even a light dusting of snow made the path easy to navigate. I never had to pause to consider which way to go.
At one point, the nature trail met a small road utilized by local residents. From there, we continued along the road toward the peninsula’s tip, where the path seamlessly transitioned back into the woods. The final stretch before reaching the viewpoint led us through a breathtaking pine forest, home to an array of magnificently plated pines.
Upon reaching the shore, we couldn’t ignore the mood as the weather continued to shift. The stunning coastal cliffs captivated us, a rugged beauty reminiscent of smooth, glacially polished rocks—something I had long missed in my life. Yet, it was the horizon that truly captured our attention, where a band of snowfall approached with dramatic flair.
For a brief moment, we relished the sunlight dancing on the rocky shores of Kuuvannokka.
The sea was frozen, a sight I did not anticipate. At some point, drifting ice floes must have merged to create a solid sheet.
We noticed that there were no designated spots to rest. So if you plan to bring snacks, be prepared to forgo an open fire. I can easily envision warm summer days where picnickers gather, basking on the seaside rocks with their baskets full of treats. During our visit, we encountered just one dog walker—otherwise, the landscape was ours to enjoy.
Except for a mute swan, that is. It glided in from Kolkannokka just as we arrived, gracefully preening its feathers right before our eyes. Its striking white silhouette provided a stunning contrast against the otherwise dark and dramatic backdrop.
As we made our way back from the peninsula, the wind picked up, and soon heavy snowflakes filled the air. By the time we reached the parking area, we were enveloped in a flurry of handkerchief-sized flakes, covering us and the landscape alike. Before climbing into the car, we had to stomp off the snow, determined not to let the winter storm accompany us inside.
A Warm Contrast: The Botanical Garden
Driving back toward central Turku, we passed the University of Turku Botanical Garden, where noble trees were just beginning to awaken from their winter slumber. Snowy fields adorned with eager skiers glided past us as if forever chasing winter’s final moments.
But as the snowstorm moved on, the sky began to clear. We parked at Ruissalo Botanical Garden, where we treated ourselves to coffee and donuts at the café before stepping inside the lush, vibrant greenhouses. Each greenhouse revealed a different climate and forest type, home to astonishingly large golden Pothos vines. The heady scents of flowers and rainforests transported me back to childhood travels, while koi carp swam gracefully in the waterlily pond just a stone’s throw from smaller fish, and parrots filled the canopy with their lively chatter.
Our time at Ruissalo Garden added a delightful dimension to an otherwise invigorating day spent in the fresh air and sea breeze. I highly recommend making a stop at the garden when exploring Ruissalo’s natural beauty. It also offers an extensive map of the area, including Kuuva, making it easier to plan the entirety of your day.
This time, we didn’t venture into the garden’s outdoor areas, but I look forward to returning in the summer to experience those as well!
