Discover the Hidden Charms of Iceland’s Remote West Fjords

Set off on a self-drive adventure through Iceland’s breathtaking West Fjords, where rugged coastlines, soaring cliffs, and historic fishing villages await. Experience nature at its finest as you marvel at the stunning Dynjandi waterfall, gaze over the Látrabjarg cliffs, and keep an eye out for puffins, seals, and whales. Over an immersive six days, prepare to uncover hidden treasures and create unforgettable memories in one of Iceland’s most pristine regions.

This suggested itinerary covers six days but can easily be adjusted to suit your schedule. To truly soak up the beauty of this remarkable area, we recommend giving yourself extra time. Your arrival and departure, along with any added days, will be expertly arranged by our Travel Experts to ensure a seamless experience. We also encourage you to spend at least one full day in Reykjavík, either before or after your tour, to delve into the vibrant culture and scenery of the capital.

Day 1 | Westbound Adventures
West Iceland & Hvammsvík Baths

Kick off your West Fjords journey by heading west from Reykjavík, traversing the beautiful Hvalfjörður Fjord. Make stops at cultural landmarks such as Reykholt, and be enchanted by the stunning Barnafoss and Hraunfossar waterfalls. Get acquainted with local life at the Haafell Icelandic Goats Farm, and explore the hiking trails around Húsafell. As the day winds down, relax in the soothing waters of the Hvammsvík Hot Springs, where geothermal heat mingles with the ocean breeze.

Day 2 | Into The Countryside
Farm Experiences & Heydalur Retreat

Embark on a picturesque drive to Erpsstaðir Dairy Farm, where a guided tour unveils the secrets behind Icelandic skyr cheese and ice cream production. Indulge in farm-fresh delights and take in the pastoral scenery before continuing to Heydalur Guesthouse. Nestled in a tranquil valley, this retreat invites you to unwind: hike nearby trails, soak in natural hot springs, or relax in the on-site sauna. Savor a delightful dinner at the guesthouse’s restaurant to cap off the day.

Day 3 | Highlights of Ísafjörður
Wildlife Encounters & Coastal Wonders

After breakfast at Heydalur, delve deeper into the West Fjords. Your first stop is the Arctic Fox Centre in Súðavík, where you’ll learn about Iceland’s indigenous foxes and ongoing conservation efforts. Arrive in Ísafjörður, the bustling heart of the fjords, for lunch before setting sail on a guided boat tour to Vigur Island. Here, you’ll encounter puffins, seals, and stunning coastal vistas. In the evening, return to the serene Önundarfjörður Fjord to soak in the picturesque surroundings.

Looking to customize your day? Consider a boat trip to the remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, the only spot in Iceland where Arctic Foxes are fully protected. Visit Hysterical—an evocative village of preserved 1900s homes still in use during the summer. Stroll along the beach and visit the local church, as your guide shares captivating stories of the area’s history. Wind down with a warming drink and traditional pastries before making your way back to the mainland.

Day 4 | The Call of Dynjandi
Cascading Waterfalls & Historic Relics

Set your sights on the mesmerizing Dynjandi waterfall, an iconic symbol of the West Fjords. A short hike reveals this multi-tiered natural wonder, then continue along the stunning coastline to the Látrabjarg Cliffs, Iceland’s westernmost point and a haven for bird enthusiasts. Upon your journey, pay a visit to the shipwreck of Garðar BA 64, a striking remnant of maritime history. Your day concludes in the charming village of Patreksfjörður, offering a peaceful place to reflect on the experiences you’ve gathered.

Day 5 | Back to the Past
Viking Sagas & Volcanic Views

Your journey south resumes, weaving through fjords and mountains. A visit to Eiríksstaðir, the reconstructed Viking longhouse of Erik the Red, provides a glimpse into Iceland’s rich Viking heritage. Finally, set your course for the enchanting Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where you’ll spend the night. Embrace the freedom of exploration today and soak in the wonders of this remarkable landscape at your own pace.

Day 6 | Iceland in Miniature
Discover Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Explore the diverse landscapes of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature.” From volcanic craters and lava fields to the splendid Snæfellsjökull Glacier, this region promises a fitting finale to your West Fjords adventure. Walk along dramatic coastlines and discover charming villages like Arnarstapi. After a day full of discovery, return to Reykjavík for your last evening, cherishing the memories of your breathtaking journey through West Iceland.
