Leevi Selänne Shines at Mestis Debut Amid Contract Changes
Leevi Selänne, the 25-year-old forward, has had a rocky start to his Mestis career this season. Earlier this week, he and Joensuu Kiekko-Pojat parted ways, prompting Selänne to take a step down to the Suomi series.
However, his transition to Järvenpää’s Hawks proved to be a triumphant one. The Hawks secured a solid 4–2 victory against Muik Hockey in front of a lively crowd, with Selänne contributing significantly by scoring one goal and assisting another.
The buzz surrounding Selänne’s arrival seemed to resonate with local fans. A remarkable 745 spectators packed into the Järvenpää ice rink — a venue that holds up to 1,300 — to cheer on their team. It’s an impressive turnout, especially for a team like the Hawks, who are currently riding high with a seven-game winning streak at the top of the Finnish league.
Looking ahead, Selänne is set to make his mark in the professional league in Finland for the 2023–24 season, previously representing Kajaani Hokki. Last season, he showcased his talent in Sweden’s fourth-tier league with Ockelbo HC, where he made a notable impact by notching up 24 points through 15 goals and 9 assists over 32 games.
As he embarks on this new chapter, all eyes will be on the young forward to see how he continues to develop and contribute to his team’s success in the coming weeks.
