Wolf Encounter Leaves Dog Walker Injured Near Lauhanvuori National Park
A man walking his dog near Lauhanvuori National Park experienced a frightening encounter on Saturday night when he was bitten on the hand by what is believed to be a wolf.
Southern Ostrobothnia police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident, which was brought to their attention over the weekend. Mikael Appel, the Communications Manager for the Ostrobothnia Police Department, acknowledged the report in a conversation with Yle.
According to police, the man was walking his dog when the animal became agitated, growling and attempting to break free from its leash. As the owner scanned the area, he spotted a creature approaching them. In a defensive move, he raised his hand and was bitten.
Fortunately, the man sustained only minor injuries and managed to walk home before filing a report with authorities.
The police, along with representatives from the Finnish Wildlife Agency, launched an investigation at the scene on Sunday. Unfortunately, their efforts were hampered by overnight rain and the movement of hunters in the area, making it difficult to find any traces of the wolf.
Jarkko Latvanen, chair of the Kauhajoki hunting group that operates in the vicinity, pointed out that wolves are known to inhabit the region, making such incidents a “real possibility.”
Earlier this year, the specialist project Life BorealWolf (commonly referred to as LifeWolf in Finnish) issued warnings to both hunting groups and dog walkers about the increased likelihood of encounters with wolves in Finland’s forests this autumn, highlighting a significant rise compared to the previous year.
As investigations continue, officials are urging caution for those venturing into wooded areas. Further updates are expected as the police look into this unsettling incident.
